Abstract

This research focuses on the design and testing of a vertical axis wind turbine (VAWT) Savonius type with two blades in an S-Helix configuration, intended to operate under low wind speed conditions at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Kristen Indonesia. The primary objective is to develop a prototype capable of converting wind kinetic energy into electrical energy with a target output of 5 W using a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator (PMSG). The methodology includes mechanical design of the turbine, selection of polypropylene (PP) blades, integration of the energy conversion system, and experimental testing with wind speed variations ranging from 0.31 to 5.65 m/s. The experimental results indicate that the prototype begins operation at a cut-in speed of approximately 1.7–2 m/s, with maximum output power reaching ±2 W at wind speeds of 4–5 m/s, which falls short of the design target. Increasing wind speed from 2–5 m/s raises rotor speed from 100 RPM to over 200 RPM, while output voltage remains relatively stable between 6–8 V. The Tip Speed Ratio (TSR) ranges from 0.5–1.9, with optimal performance at 4 m/s, and the power coefficient (Cp) varies between 0.2–0.6. Overall, the study demonstrates that the Savonius S-Helix turbine has potential as an urban wind energy generator under low wind conditions, providing a foundation for future design optimization and efficiency improvements.
