Abstract

This study explores how breastfeeding content creators on TikTok perceive and construct the meaning of breast pumping activities. Employing a descriptive qualitative method, this research analyzes how breast pumping practices are framed and shared on the platform. The study applies a phenomenological approach grounded in self-disclosure theory, utilizing Strauss and Corbin’s open, axial, and selective coding techniques for data analysis. The findings reveal that mothers perceive breast pumping as a form of maternal dedication and parenting commitment amidst physical constraints or work demands; over time, this practice evolves into a form of solidarity among mothers. Content creation serves a dual function: as a digital diary for personal lactation evaluation and as a coping mechanism to manage emotional exhaustion. The motivation behind sharing this content has grown into a collective movement aimed at educating the public and deconstructing the idealized standards of breast milk oversupply. Furthermore, audience support and the TikTok algorithm drive a transformation in meaning, normalizing an activity that was once considered private and taboo. This study concludes that sharing breast pumping content is the result of a dynamic negotiation between the personal reconstruction of motherhood roles, the relational support of digital communities, and the monetization opportunities provided by the digital platform.
