Abstract

Patriarchy is a social system that places men in a higher position than women. This causes gender inequality. In Indonesia, a lot of patriarchal culture has been instilled starting from the family. The film “Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap” raises the image of a Batak family which is very thick with patriarchal culture. This film tells the story of a family consisting of Pak Domu (father), Mak Domu (mother), and their children Domu, Gabe, Sarma dan Sahat. This family seems to be controlled by the father, Pak Domu, who is very selfish in managing his family. This study aims to see how the form of patriarchy is depicted in the film “Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap”. This study uses qualitative research methods and de Saussure's semiotic theory to analyze the data. The results of this study show the thickness of the patriarchal culture depicted in the film “Ngeri-Ngeri Sedap”, such as, women have to obey men and women don't have to pursue career too much. patriarchy is also seen to be detrimental to men with the existence of Pak Domu who is very powerful as a father so he can control his three sons.
