Abstract

Twenty-first century learning requires teachers to implement instructional strategies

that foster students’ critical thinking and problem-solving skills. However, classroom

practices are still largely dominated by conventional teacher-centered approaches,

which often result in low cognitive learning outcomes. This article aims to analyze the

effectiveness of the Problem Based Learning (PBL) model as a twenty-first century learning

strategy in strengthening students’ cognitive learning outcomes. This study employed a

quasi-experimental approach using a nonequivalent control group design. The research

subjects were divided into an experimental group taught using PBL and a control group

taught using direct instruction. Cognitive learning outcome data were collected through

pretest and posttest instruments developed based on the revised Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Data were analyzed using non-parametric statistical tests and N-Gain analysis. The

results indicate that the implementation of PBL leads to a significant improvement in

students’ cognitive learning outcomes, with a high level of gain. These findings confirm

that PBL is an effective and relevant innovative learning strategy for supporting twenty-

first century learning.
