Abstract

Activation energy is a topic in physical chemistry that is often considered difficult to

understand because it is abstract and cannot be observed directly, so students struggle

to relate it to everyday phenomena. This study analyzed students' content knowledge

on activation energy through the application of Contextual Teaching and Learning (CTL)

assisted by karate demonstration videos, which illustrate the initial energy required for

a movement as an analogy of activation energy in chemical reactions. A quantitative

approach with a quasi-experimental One Group Pretest–Posttest Design was used,

involving Chemistry Education students at Universitas Kristen Indonesia. Data were

collected through pretest and posttest instruments and analyzed descriptively. The

results show that the CTL model assisted by karate demonstration videos improved

students' content knowledge, reflected in a better understanding of activation energy, its

relation to collision theory and reaction rate, and its connection to real phenomena in

karate movements. The approach also encouraged active engagement, making abstract

concepts easier to understand. It is concluded that CTL supported by karate

demonstration videos is an effective and innovative alternative for teaching abstract

chemical concepts, particularly activation energy.
