Abstract Blastocystis hominis is the most common protozoa found in human feces and transmitted through oro-fecal. Until now, the role of B. hominis as a cause of gastrointestinal infections remains unclear. In tourists, the presence of these protozoa is often a problem especially those traveling to the tropics. The clinical symptoms of this infection are vary from diarrhea, fever, nausea and vomiting to dermatological disorders. Diagnosis can be made by microscope examining the feces wet preparation under and Jones culture medium or Löwenstein–Jensen medium. The treatment for tourists also still a debate, some researchers state that this infection is considered as self-limiting disease. The use of metronidazole and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole showed good results for B. hominis eradication. Preventions for tourists who traveling to the tropics can be done by avoiding foods and beverages contaminated by B. hominis.
Keywords: blastocistosis, travel medicine, oro-fecal transmission, diarrhea, feces</p>}, number={4}, journal={Majalah Kedokteran UKI}, author={Ronny}, year={2018}, month={Dec.}, pages={190 - 199} }
