ISU IDENTITAS DAN HIBRIDITAS DALAM NOVEL THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS (1996) KARYA ARUNDHATI ROY

Abstract

The God of Small Things karya Arundhati Roy mengangkat narasi tentang potret masyarakat India pascakemerdekaan. Isu sosial dan permasalahan identitas budaya yang tergambar dari tokoh-tokoh dalam novel terkait erat dengan wacana pascakolonial. Warisan historis dan kodisi sosial masyarakat pascakolonial menjadi jembatan terbentuknya krisis identitas yang dipenuhi dengan ambiguitas. Para tokoh perlu memiliki strategi dalam merespon krisis identitas sehingga memunculkan hibriditas para tokoh dalam novel. Teori hibriditas Homi Bhabha digunakan untuk menganalisa hibriditas tokoh yang terbentuk melalui pengamatan terhadap tokoh-tokoh yang merepresentasikan hibriditas. Hibriditas kemudian digunakan sebagai media negosiasi para tokoh dalam merespon keberadaan “ruang ketiga” yang mereka huni.
